Kids' Furniture

When designing a room for a child, there are some factors to take into consideration:

  • Will you be redecorating as the child gets older?
  • Do you want to go with a theme?
  • Do you want a timeless room?
  • Does the décor have to coordinate with other rooms?
  • Budget
  • How much time do you have to complete the project

If you are decorating a room for a baby, you will probably go with a boy or girl theme.  This can be done with draperies, carpet, accessories, wall coverings and bedding.  Depending on the type of furniture that you have chosen, it will also be part of the overall theme.  You might want to have this room decorated as a baby’s room, knowing that you will redecorate as the child gets older, or you might think about a room that will transition to an older child as the child matures.

Depending on the budget that you have to work with, the possibilities are endless.  You might want to create a really unique theme for the room such as the beach, sailing/ sailboats, pirates, sports, cars, animals, the circus, serene and calming, aquarium, the wild west, winter sports, trains, dolls, etc.

Before you start, plan out your room first.  Once you have chosen a theme, you can then start choosing furniture, wall coverings or paint to coordinate with the theme, window coverings or drapes, the accessories and bedding to go with the theme.

For example, if you pick sailing as a theme, you can make a sailboat for a bed.  You can choose sailboat wallpaper or draw a mural of a beach on the wall.  You can have a nautical theme or make it just sailboats.  Choose draperies and bed coverings that have the sailing theme.  Find a rug that is either a blue or one that has a nautical theme to it – possibly ropes.  The lamps and accessories can have nautical themes also.

Designing a children’s room is a lot of fun, because it allows your imagination to go wild.  But, make sure that the room is not too overwhelming.  It has to be inviting and interesting, but not too over the top.  You want a comfortable room that is fun for your child to be in and will enjoy.
